I am an avid reader and an experienced literacy specialist having worked in education for over a decade. I love reading with my daughter and will share ideas, resources, tips and answer questions so you can love reading with your kids too.
While studying at University of Michigan, I worked with teachers and school administrators to create and implement educational tutoring programs for children in Detroit Public Schools. I stayed on as an Americorps member to reach more kids over the summers. |
I earned my Master's in Education and a literacy degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. My thesis research focused on teaching phonics to elementary school students and exploring a link to comprehension (I did find one).
I have taught in Detroit, Chicago and New York. I taught in charter and public schools as a classroom teacher as well as a reading specialist. I have spent years training teachers in literacy concepts. I have trained teachers while they were in the classroom and understand that real classrooms are living organisms. Every day is not a cookie cutter day.
I consulted in New York City classrooms, working with teachers to implement best practices in literacy instruction. I trained teachers for a number of years and have worked closely with principals to determine their school's highest needs in literacy and help them act on those needs. I've written curriculum, taught that curriculum and worked with teachers to implement great reading and writing lessons, leveraging their students' interests and skills.
As a reading specialist, I am trained in the balanced literacy approach, Writer's Workshop, many reading assessment programs, curriculum mapping, Common Core, as well as Positive Behavior Intervention Systems. I am a member of the International Literacy Association and ASCD.
I have worked with parents to motivate their kids to read and get better at it. I remember telling a student of mine, "Well, you only get better at reading by reading!" She looked at me, thought about it, and grabbed more books off the shelf. That's what we want.
I would be able to help you plan a course of action for literacy at home - one that makes sense for your family and is sensitive to all the other priorities in your lives!

My all-time favorite book is without a doubt A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. I think I've read it at least 50 times. I love reading Because of Winn Dixie and Where the Red Fern Grows to kids out loud. As a kid, I used to make flashlight tents in my bed so I could stay up reading late. I still stay up late to read...but now I can just do it on the couch. The tent was more fun.
