Dear Educator,
You are in a unique position in a child's life and in a family's life. You are informing a child about the world. And you, are informing parents about their children.
After having taught in Detroit, Chicago and New York, I only want to support teachers. Please consider this a place for you to ask questions, seek advice, ask for research to be done.
I want this website to be a resource for your parents so they can help their children. So you can help their children. Really, I want this to be a tool for you and your parents. Please feel free to ask me questions, to look into research for you (I am diligent), and to write resources you can share with your friends. Always feel free to share the resources here with your communities.
I want to sift through kids' books, chapter books, look at reading extensions, reading supports, read literacy research, to engage young readers. Think of wacky ideas that'll engage kids in literacy. You should absolutely use me! I would love to help plan and preview books, literacy lessons, podcasts, movies. Spitball ideas. Maybe there is something you've been trying to get through to your parents but it's not sticking. Maybe they need to hear it from someone else. I'm happy to be a voice of support for you, support you, and provide your parents with more resources so they can help their kids be more literate.
If you want to let me know any literacy topics you want some more support with - maybe you've got a group of boys who don't want to read at home, or kids who will only read a certain genre, or kids who just won't read at all, or kids who read so fast they miss comprehending, or parents who need to know how to do a read aloud. Anything. Maybe you need a primer for your parents on what they can be doing at home - what reading levels mean, what a trip to the library should look like.
I will get researching, writing and sharing the information back to you! I have a wide network of teachers, principals and parents around me. We can all share resources. We want our parents as involved as they can be without judging or over-taxing them. And we want our kids to read!
Enjoy your place in that special window into a family's home. But, don't forget you can always ask for help!
