Gary Paulsen

An author who had a tough time reading (and didn't until 9th grade), started writing at the age of 26. Many of his books have elements from his own life or from other true stories. His main characters are almost always boys and it takes him about 2-3 years to write his books.

He has a over 180 titles in print and a few series - the most famous being the Brian series, which includes The Hatchet. Gary notes that this book should absolutely be read first. His favorite books are Moby Dick and Moveable Feast. His favorite person is Rosa Parks.

He has won three Newbery awards - The Hatchet, Dogsong and The Winter Room.
